The market opportunity for a killer battery is going up, I am not sure if Li batteries with the current chemistries will prevail in a mass market, hydrogen fuel cells are expensive and need to tango with distribution infrastructure.

A market hole for a killer battery, simpler chemistry, fast charging, low cost, high energy density is getting bigger each day. Sodium or lithium glass battery invented recently by some of Li batteries inventor, John Goodenough shows some promise.
 
I would doubt Cartels in the Automotive industry are unique. Sharing of parts by various automakers or mutual development of engines, transmissions is another sign
