LOL. It would a feat worth celebrating if you can ship more units, yet have declining market share.

I thought the two statistics were collected differently, aren't the shipment numbers just released collected from shipment numbers from the factory and the market share numbers from actual retail vehicle registrations?

Isn't there a lag between the two? Shipments may end up being retail registrations at some point in the future, right?

If Jim did manage to ship more vans as a result of his salathon then they would show up as more market share in the coming months as the are registered?

Who knows, maybe he sold very few or maybe lots but if he sold lots then they should show up at some point in the market numbers...

I updated the old chart to include 2015 - better late than never

Class B Shipments.JPG

For 2016, it should blow through the 3500 limit I put on the chart when I originally did it.

Only one possible explanation for this rise in shipments, Jim Hammill sold a bunch of vans with his super deal sellathon... .

Seems odd for such a big jump in August. Usually there is a spring bump.

If it were to be from Roadtrek, you'd see a big bump in their market share, which is doubtful.

It may be the handful of new players and building inventory for them - Chinook, Galleria, Avion to name a few, not to mention the growth from the big three - WGO, RT & Thor. With growth at the big three, they can hold their market share, even with these other makers shipping more units.

But look at the growth in class C! That must be all those B+ and small C units. That market is red hot it appears.

I'm a member both the View/Navion and Fuse Facebook and Yahoo groups. Based on the number of new folks showing up there with just purchased units, especially the Fuse groups, I'd say the market is still booming for C's.
My contact over at the Ford plant here in KC where the Transit is built said they recently upped the % of cutaway chassis numbers being built.
I know WGO has had to up their Fuse production twice in the last 6 months to keep up

Is Thor just Airstream for Class B or do they have other brands?

Also is that for Aug or Sept? (There was a previous post for Aug)

This one was August sales, the prior one was August shipments. There are two reports each month.

As far as I know the only Class B's from Thor are Airstream units.

I saw that and wondered about it. Since they only build on a diesel chassis are their sales number higher than the ERA and the total Roadtrek Sprinter numbers? Or, is the Interstate a model and it sells more than the ERA, E-trek, CS, SS, etc., as individual models?

Of course, we also still get this rather odd marketing info regularly...

ERWIN HYMER GROUP NORTH AMERICA, INC. is the leading manufacturer of class B motorhomes in North America...

Uh, look again. It doesn't say "Top Selling", it says "Number One". They don't get to make up sales figures, but the DO get to make up their own definition of "Number One".

Yes, no clue what "leading" means in the Erwin Hymer spiel either...

...and the Travato is "the best value", and for "active" RVers. So if you're still "active", I guess Winnebago is your only choice...

"Active" in carrying paddle boards and bikes on the weekend or "active' in being out on the road for extended periods? That Hymer Aktiv could never meet my needs, comfort and expectations for extended touring.

From my point of view on Class B sales - we are buying one as a pre-retirement RV (or call it semi-retired if you want). We both have flexible schedules to get a lot of 3,4 or even 5 day weekends throughout the year. So a B is fine for that.

I also think there is the demand in the west for more agile motorhomes. The average 60 year old today has different tastes than 30 years ago. One, of the many, cars that my brother in California has is a 1963 Cadillac Eldorado 2 door convertible. He tells me it is 20 foot long - so that was the mindset then - bigger is better. Japanese cars changed all that.

When we get to full retirement age (in 10 years) and want to spend 5-6 months in Arizona then, maybe, we will look at something a bit more spacious. Maybe.

Just saw this tidbit of info - it applies to all RV's in general.

"RV owners aged 35 to 54 posted the largest percentage gains in ownership over the past decade. Importantly, ownership rates rise quickly and remain at high levels across all age groups until owners were above the age of 75 years."
