Default Appalling sound Onan QC 2800

I ordered a resonator and a downpipe to see if I could quiet the noise a bit.
Without anything running inside, except the fridge I get this at about 10 feet:

With the resonator:

Without resonator, but with down pipe:

Generator shut off, quiet shop:

The tone is much more pleasant with the resonator. The down pipe also mods the tone, but not that much.

Is your plan to install it in-line or just attach it to the tailpipe when needed? I wonder if it was welded in-line it would make a difference, if you put it in-line report back with the numbers.

Wincrasher,

Interesting information. I saw a video demonstrating the difference between the Resonator and Non-resonator noise and it seems to go in the same direction as your measurements. A slight reduction in noise with a change in the quality of the sound ... i.e. not as irritating.
It would be interesting if you brought your sound meter with you for your next outing. I suspect the increase in noise with the deflector is caused by reflection on the cement floor. If you used it on grass, I would think it would reduce the sound level, instead of increasing it. Perhaps that, combined with the resonator, might make a 2 or 3dB difference.

Thanks for sharing.

I will definitely be doing that, as I suspect you are right.

Lay a piece of cardboard against the side of the van and stand in the same spot and try again. Just humor me. I am a musician and play in studios sometimes with drummers. They baffle them off if they can't put them in their own booth.

Please give details of the resonator you installed. Make, model and where to buy. 79dbA to 71.5 dbA is a significant decrease in noise level and I certainly would like to know the details,

Thanks

Amazon has them. Punch in Onan resonator, I think they are all the same size for the 2.5 and 2.8.

That went from 78.4 to 77.5. Not a huge amount, but as I said, the tone is different. Just search on Amazon. There is only one Onan resonator to fit the 1.5" diameter tailpipe of the QG 2800.

I'll give you $500.00 for your generator plus shipping. PM.me. Just kidding I'm sure you will grow to love it as I have all the generators I have had in my rigs.

LOL. Maybe 500 Euros and I'd think about it!

Actually, it's fine and dandy while traveling. Who cares about noise at a rest area or Walmart lot? Today I ran the Onan for an hour in a restaurant parking lot so the dog could stay cool while I had a nice lunch. Wasn't bothering anybody, and nobody cared. But I could hear it as soon as I stepped outside the restaurant. I couldn't tell you if it was louder than the AC unit though. Both running together make quite the commotion!

On those occasions I go to a serene spot in the Appalacians were there are nearby campers, I'll just use my Yamaha 1000 for the water heater and battery charging. Don't need the AC up there, so don't really need all the capability of the Onan.
