That pesky tire issue
I had purchased 4 Goodyear G26 Cargo tires from Tire Rack in July 2015 (225/70/15c). These are 6 ply tires and have a load rating of approximately 2,300 lbs per tire, which is well within the spec for the gross rear axle weight of the Rialta which is approximately 4,000 lbs. These were purchased based on the recommendation at the Rialta Heaven website. I can attest that this size tire does fit fine and has not adversely impacted my fuel economy.
However, last night I had a blow out at highway speed on the passenger side rear. Of course, this was at night and in the rain coming back from a week-end camping trip. Fortunately, I was close to home and my Good Sam RV roadside took care of the tire change. The tire had 4,000 miles on it.
This morning after inspecting the tire at the tire dealer, we determined that the belts had separated on the wall of the tire. Could this have been from hitting a pothole? A tire defect? It will remain a mystery. However, the tire was well within spec for the Rialta load rating.
The Goodyear G26 Cargo is no longer made (of course!). I am now moving to a Maxxis tire of the same size but I'm going to an 8 ply tire with a load rating of 2,469 pounds per tire. This is about 25% greater than the max required. Hopefully this margin for error will solve the problem.
If anyone has some similar experiences, please post so we can have a community discussion. Thanks.
