Default Rear Axle Issues

I have had a failure of the RH end of the rear axle on my 97 Rialta. This resulted in a complete detachment of the wheel and brake assembly from the vehicle while underway. A visual inspection leads me to believe the axle-end fractured as a result of long-term fatigue cracking in a specific area. The opposite end of the axle shows cracking in the same area.

I have spoken with a gentleman at NHTSA and he indicates this has been the second such failure of a Rialta axle in this manner reported to them in the last 6 months. Comparative photos of the two instances appear almost identical, in my opinion. If you have had a failure of this type you might want to let them know about it. I have the contact info if you need it.

This problem has been discussed on the yahoo groups site a lot this past year. Also photos of the cracks and causes were discussed and how to repair or fix the crack. You can also check the big tent URL that the NOTOWBAGO's and Rialta-Tech are now using.

Hi, my 1997 Rialto just broke the rear axle right hand side just as you described so how do I contact the NHTSA that you recommended? Thanks, Bob.
