Loud clunking in back while driving - solution - new shocks
1999 HD here. For quite a while there was a metal on metal clanking sound while driving. It was mainly in the back of the coach but there was clunking on bumps up front too. VW checked and said all was well. A mechanic friend rode along and immediately said it was the shocks; ALL of them! I bought a great set of Bilstiens specifically sold in a kit from europarts-sd.com based in San Diego. They offered free shipping and the package was far less than the dealer charges. My VW dealer agreed to install them. I also had bad front sway arm bushings. OMG! The thing is as quiet and smooth as a Cadillac and handles like a dream. Only sad part about this story is that the VW dealer "rotated" my tires. I didn't realize until I read the Invoice later that evening at home. I ran out of the house screaming only to realize I had driven 60 miles with backwards Rialta tires. For those that don't know (including the VW Dealer) the front tires on a Rialta are smaller than the rear tires. It sure looked funny like that and I wondered why it seemed to steer harder and ride rougher in the rear. It was so different and quiet with the new shocks I didn't really notice. I had to hire the same mechanic friend to rotate the tires at the driveway as it was unsafe to risk 60 miles back to VW. I called them and "trained" them for the future. Ya never know and you always have to double check the details. Get the new shocks; it's day and night better!
