Re: Winter!
Thanks,(you did mean the cloth cover, not the snow cover) I've had it since the first winter we had the van. I already had a 2 car garage but only 7' high door. I didn't really have room for another garage for the van, so I found this for $400, and problem solved.

Re: Winter!
Jaysus, man!!!!
Scared the heck out of us, with our year's end trip to the mountains just
a few weeks away.
I did speak to a guy at the Good Sam call centre (Denver, CO) who said
we might not be able to get to Rocky Mtn NP in a couple more weeks
because they do get snow this early.
He said they'd close the roads in, if safety became an issue,
but I'm hoping we'll catch a break and get in there for at least
one night.

Re: Winter!
Going down to minus 10 C tonight and we're in the RV near Calgary. I haven't done any real winter camping so this is a crash course on it. The furnace just seems to want to run continously. All the exterior compartments are iced shut from highway muck. Darn near whiteout conditions on the Trans Canada 70 miles west of Calgary today.
It's time to head south!

Re: Winter!
Good Luck Mark. We drove through the ice storm of 1997/98. Our RV was nice and warm but having over an inch of ice all over the outside of the RV made things interesting. Just drive safe and have warm thoughts. Hopefully the cold will pass and things will get a little warmer.

Re: Winter!
Didn't think to ask, but do these small RVs just have one propane tank?
Pain in the butt if your cooking, but a real problem if the furnace dies. Just snuggle up I guess.

Re: Winter!
My PW only has one tank. It has a gauge on it and I check it each day that i am using same. If I was to run out of propane i do have a generator as back up for electric heat and cooking if need be.

Re: Winter!
I don't know if all class b's have the same size propane tank, but I've gone camping for 2 weeks and only used about 1/2 tank. It was summer, so only the refer and the furnace in the morning was about all the propane we used, but I've never ever worried about running out. I have a '95 Pleasure Way. Yes, when it gets colder out, you had better watch the levels. Mine is already in winter storage as we got blasted this last week. Today, we had a high of -4C. Brrrr. ;(

If you are imagining the small 20 lb. tanks one hooks up to a grill or typically on the front hitch frame of an RV trailer you would be right and it would not be enough. There is one custom tank usually around 10-12 gallons permanently mounted underneath the B. Thus a typical B tank would be equivalent of two plus the standard grill tank.

Re: Winter!
When it is cold........... I went from plus 12 to minus 10 on this trip.
# 1 - propane - we filled up at around minus 6 or minus 8 - Would we have gotten more propane by volume because it was so cold? It's still above half despite running the fridge all day and furnace all night for a week. Or is propane so cold it doesn't matter?
# 2 - tire pressure - it had dropped 5 psi when I last checked at around minus 6 and that was after driving for half an hour so they were not "cold". I think a portable compressor is on my "gotta get one" list. Then I can check the tires more frequently when on the road.

Re: Winter!
Most vehicle propane tanks fill by volume with a float. So yes you get more propane when cold. Most portable tanks, despite some having floats, are filled by weight. So you typically get the same amount each fill. Not sure if they're pumps are temperature corrected, but I suspect you actually pay for what you get.
In case your interested a pound of propane has 21,591 btu's. Thus a 20lb tank holds 345456btu (20lbs @ 80%)
A 10,000btu furnace could run 34 hrs non stop. But a typical fridge might be 500btu, so no real load on the tank

Re: Winter!
Let me say good luck on the trip as well.
We just got back from the canyons in CO/UT/AZ and the temps were below or close to freezing at elevation
at night, with a decent warm up during the day. We did get into RMNP but it was more crowded than we
had hoped and so just carried on to Moab and beyond.
We spent the last 4 days until yesterday touring the southeastern US where the predominant weather was rain and cool.

Re: Winter!
I had added an "Extend-a-stay" fitting to my main propane tank just in front of the regulator so that I can run off of a 20lb tank when needed. The 20lb tank would only last 4 days running the 30,000btu furnace in the Class C. Minus 6 C those nights.

Re: Winter!
Just an update to say that we're in New Brunswick now. We lived in the RV for 5 weeks. 12 days of leisurely driving to get across Canada. It was a good trip.

Re: Winter!
Glad to hear you made it safe Mark. I hope the weather was nice. The trees changing colors must have been quite picturous.
