I use to have Delorme street atlas hooked to a GPS receiver on my laptop and it was great. I didn't need an internet connection as the map was just loaded on the computer. Well Delorme map is no more and I was just wondering what other programs are out there that can do the same thing at least inexpensive programs.
We use Garmin basecamp which is a standalone route planner that uses identical maps and generates identical routes as the Garmin GPS. Works very well for us because we make a lot of special routings and like to chose our own roads. Other methods of transferring routes to the GPS from software always got a lot of "freelancing" by the GPS because it calculated routes between our entered points differently.
Unfortunately, basecamp only works with Garmin GPS units.
I use Co-Pilot on an iPad and find that it is very versatile and like the previous poster stated, uses an internal database and does not require internet connectivity. Because, like DeLorme, it is a vector map rather than a bitmap and so expands without losing detail.
