Default Sprinter heating and cooling control system

I have a 2005 Freightliner Sprinter conversion with diesel engine. 94K miles. There appears to be an issue with the heating/cooling controls. In brief, the temp control is inconsistent for delivering proper temperature.

I get a blast of hot air, lasting up to 3 minutes, every time I move the temperature control, even the slightest amount, in any setting. This even happens with non-heating airflow. I barely have to turn the temp control knob for this to happen. As well I have never needed to go beyond the first inch or so on the dial (still in the "cool" area) to get adequate heat. After this initial blast of hot air the temp mostly evens out, but will periodically throw more blasts of hot air.

The setting positions (heat, defrost, etc.) also seem difficult to move.

Anyone else experienced these symptoms?
