Speedometer Problem

Our 1991 Roadtrek (Dodge) will register the miles traveled but not the speed. Its been hesitating in the past - - first it wouldn't work then after hitting the first bump in the road or whatever it would slowly work it way up to the actual speed we were traveling and work fine the remainder of the day or days. Yesterday, I took a short trip of 5 miles or so and it didn't make it off zero ------ what to do? Where to start, short of going to a speedometer shop.

PJRACER, Do you know if yours is cable from the transmission or electronic (wire from the transmission)? If the odometer works but not the speedo, it sounds like a faulty speed gauge in the dash. Bummer! I hate working under the dash.
My 92 RT had neither odometer or speedometer working, but I fixed it with a new electronic sending unit on the tranny for about 40 bucks. It does not sound like yours will be that easy.

If the speedometer cable just goes to the dash, my guess is the dash mechinism is the problem. I would try checking a junkyard for the dash unit to change it.
