Default Rear door won't open from outside (1990 G30 - Roadtrek 190V)

I have a 1990 Roadtrek 190V (G30 Chassis).

The rear door won't open from the outside... the button is loose or jammed. I have taken off the panel and have pieced together how the lock works.

I see the push button as part of the outside handle with a rod and spring, but nothing holding the button in place. I expect perhaps some sort of retaining clip is missing from the door handle. Anyone had their door apart?

I have not had my 2005 van door apart

on early 2000's GM pick ups they use plastic clips in the linkages for the doors and tailgate
like the black clip shown in your pic

on my pickup the pass door and tailgate needed replacement as those sides are baked by the AZ sun and the clips turned to brittle dust.
the driver door side ( shaded) is fine.
But I have spares, the clips are 50¢ at dealer

have a look at a van forum to see if this is a commonly solved problem

Resolved. There is supposed to be a small retaining clip as part of the door handle. Crafted a replacement out of sheet metal using tin snips.

That retaining clip is probably lying in the bottom of the door.

I have had 3 early to mid 90s Dodge B series vans now (started with a mark III and now on a roadtrek) and I have mostly had to work on the front doors. But it seems that what breaks all the time is these little plastic clips or nubs.

Making rod wire and sheet metal replacement parts seems to be the general answer
