Default Propane Tank Inspection !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all, I have a question about the propane tank in the class b camper , Do you need a special inspection for this tank, or when your inspection is up can you go to a service station like where you get your car inspection?
Thanks, John

There are two kinds of propane tanks, DOT and ASME. DOT tanks (which are portable) need periodic inspection. Most B-vans have ASME tanks (permanently installed). They are considered part of the van and do NOT need periodic inspections.

There are a lot of misconceptions on this topic floating around, and it is not uncommon to find a propane fill station where they don't understand the rules. But, there is no such thing as an inspection certification for an ASME propane tank.

BTW: In the unlikely event that you have DOT tanks, the best practice when their inspection is about to expire is to simply take them to the propane place and swap them for a recently inspected one.

In Ontario, the permanently installed propane tanks do require an inspection after the age of 10 years and then every five years thereafter. Once passed, then there is a sticker affixed to the RV. If you do not have the sticker, you can be refused to have your tank refilled. Ours did not pass and we had to change our tank this year.

Manitoba as well.

When I went to get a safety on my van no one would touch it because of the propane. To get the safety I had to have the propane decommissioned first.

Bruceper,
Does that law apply to rv's, from out of the area passing thru Manitoba, or only to vehicles registered there?

Good, thanks. As a former Winnipeger I don't want any surprises when I visit next.

In Alberta, permanently installed tanks also require inspection. In practice though, according to an inspection facility, the requirement is not enforced. I verified that with a second inspection facility; no one bothers about it.
