I gave up RVing for boating and don't look back. Every summer for 8 years now, my kids and I travel from Trenton Ontario to Georgian Bay and back through the Trent Severn Waterway. It's 386km long and there are 45 (actually 42) locks to go through. It takes a minimum of 2 weeks to travel both ways but we usually take closer to 3 weeks travelling. There are regular locks, 2 lift locks and Big Chute rail-car lock. Two summers ago we went to Ottawa and back through the Rideau Canal. I would say travelling in our boat is easily comparable to our old RV's if you look at fuel verses time. If you look at distance, that's a different story. You can't get anything better than the piece of being on the water.
I do agree about the acronym B.O.A.T. We found a shoal in the middle of a lake going 50km/h 3 years ago. I was lucky I turned and slowed down when I did. Only took out the prop, bottom of the stern drive and a small scratch on the bottom of the boat. Don't ask what that cost. I was lucky we had insurance. This past summer, the hydraulics on the trim was leaking. The entire engine needed to be removed to replace the hydraulic lines. Considering our boat is a 1993 and has over 1200 hours on then engine, those 2 things are the only problems we've had and they were self induced. I still prefer the peace of the water and no traffic.
