This is an EXTREMELY common syndrome with older Onan's. Happened twice to me. The fix is trivial: There is a little rubber hose sticking down out the bottom of the genset. That is where the nests form (bugs are apparently attracted by fuel odor). Just poke around with a bit of wire to dislodge the mud. Instant fix.

Newer gensets come with a screen at the end of the vent hose that prevents the bugs from getting in. You can make your own easily enough.

Mine is 10 years old, has 140+ hours on it. I change old every years also I run sea foam every 4-5 tanks of gas. Sea foam good for both vehicle and genny , starts right up no problem.

It sure sounds like they've simply jerked you around long enough to rack up enough expense to sell you a new unit.

I am curious -- How much does it cost to replace the Onan?
