This is an EXTREMELY common syndrome with older Onan's. Happened twice to me. The fix is trivial: There is a little rubber hose sticking down out the bottom of the genset. That is where the nests form (bugs are apparently attracted by fuel odor). Just poke around with a bit of wire to dislodge the mud. Instant fix.
Newer gensets come with a screen at the end of the vent hose that prevents the bugs from getting in. You can make your own easily enough.
