Default Hoh and Cougar Rock campsites availabilities

We had great time in Olympus and Mount Rainer National Parks. A week in each, no reservation, just drove into the popular Hoh and Cougar Rock campgrounds and got great campsites for week long stays in each. Not bad for the middle of season. We arrived before 3PM to each, Park entry to Hoh had about 1 hour waiting line. Campsites were partially shaded but we never run below 80% SOC (230 Ah bank).

We had no issues with the van except Espar D5 furnace leaking small amount of coolant at some starts. Could be ambient temperature related. Seems as I need to completely disassembled the furnace and change all O-rings gaskets. Info for black tank owners - both campgrounds dump stations were closed.

That’s encouraging. We leave on the 3rd going out west as far as Yellowstone. We made reservations in parks and Harvest Host sites to get us over Labor Day until the 13th. After that we are winging it in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

I would have liked to have gone as far as Seattle but will just avoid the fires out west as much as possible. We had been through the fires in Santa Clara, CA a few years ago and our favorite campground is at a forest service campground, Sundew, on Buck’s Lake, CA in the Sierra Nevada’s Dixie fire. Seattle would have been a good test for a 144 WB Sprinter. We just got the Covid booster jab an hour ago. We are ready to hit the road.

Our original plan was to go to Glacier and North Cascades NPs, but fire smoke was extensive there so we went to Olympic and Mt Rainer. From Sunrise in Mt Rainer in ESE direction, we saw a quickly growing huge forest fire smoke plume, likely Schneider Springs Fire.
