Has anyone carried extra gas and how did you do it?
My first thought was on a wheeless trailor in my hitch but what if someone runs into me?

Erm, KABOOM!!!, maybe ???

Haven't tried it, but I'm wondering why you'd need to carry it in the first place?
Is your destination that remote that you need extra gas to get in and out?
I can't think of any really safe way to carry it except in a CSA/UL approved
container, in a well ventilated location, nowhere near any possible ignition source.
Again, I'd need a REALLY good reason to even try it.

I always carry 2 extra 5 gallon cans when I go on long trips. It really helped when I drove through the ice storm back in 97'ish. There was no power anywhere so no gas stations. I haven't used them very much but it is nice to have. When we drove through Northern Ontario, some gas stations were outrageously over-priced. The spare gas gave us that extra range to get to cheaper fuel.

I have a box on the back of my RV and it easily fits 2 cans. I don't have a rear door on the back of my RV so the box is no problem. Maybe a hitch mount carrier might work. You would just have to keep an eye on the weight restrictions. Gas is about 10lbs per gallon.

I guess that's me told!!!
There's been a few times I wished we'd had some, for reason number two,
but I don't think I could convince the "co-pilot" to carry any.

Geez, guys. I have a 600 mile range on a whole tank and never work on the bottom half. Unless you're crossing all of the High Plains in one setting,or trying to drive northern Nunavut, (there are roads up there aren't there?) you should be all right.
