Default GST, PST, HST, PVT taxes etc. for Canadians

In BC:

New vehicle from dealer both GST (7%) & PST (5%) are payable.
Used vehicle from dealer both GST & PST are payable.
Used vehicle from private seller only PST is payable.

BC is planning to switch to a single 12% HST in July 2010. Does anyone know how this will be applied to used vehicles purchased from private sellers?

I like to know how GST, PST, HST, PVT taxes are applied on new and used vehicle purchases both from a dealer and from private sales in all of the Canadian provinces.

It's the same in Ontario.
Any new/used car from dealership is subject to GST(5%)/PST(8%) I believe.
Privately, we only paid the PST(8%) when we bought ours last year, based on the selling price,
or a wholesale value (from a Kelley Blue Book type valuation), whichever is greater.
Next year, McGuinty plans to tax everything with an HST(13%) with very few exceptions,
under the guise of easing the "hidden business tax" on businesses, so that some things in
Ontario will be cheaper, when these fictional savings are passed on to us by retailers.
Sarcasm? Yes.
Bitter? Yes.
Amused? NO!!!

Don't know how it effects vehicles but I live in Nova Scotia when they came out with the Blended Sales Tax (BST) but was changed to Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) when they realized there was "BS" in the new tax.

The HST became a huge money grab for the Provincial Government. With the separate PST and GST, kids cloths, books, services and a lot of things were exempt PST. When the HST came in, everything became taxed. They made far more on the HST than they ever did with PST and GST.

I would watch out for what is to come. We got screwed down East. Mind you, some things did go down but not too much. We had 7% GST and 11% PST. Problem was, they took your item and added the 7% GST, subtotaled the amount and then added the PST on to that. It came out to close to 19% taxes. With the HST, everything had a 15% tax.

Governments once again supplementing their inability to control costs and
manage money, by taking more out of our pockets.

So far in Alberta there's no PST, so only the 5% GST applies (and since that's federal, I assume the rules for that piece are the same across the provinces/territories).
