Default Fresh water pump normal operation.

When turning on the water pump, it just keeps running. Shouldn't it turn itself off once pressure has built up and then resume once a tap is opened? I'm new to RV's so forgive my ignorance.

You are correct. The pump should turn off once pressure is reached. Pumps are low pressure activated. If it continues to run means something is amiss.
Check to make sure all valves are turned off. If pump continues to run, look for leaks. Could be a faucet connection or pex crimp. RV's are like earthquakes when driving. The results from constant jostling is leaks occur.

One very common cause of continuous pump running is the clear plastic cap that fits over the debris screen that many pumps have.

There are several potential issues:
--The plastic cap is cracked due to freeze damage
--It was installed without its O ring
--It is cross-threaded
--It just wasn't tightened adequately

This happens to almost everyone at some point.

These pumps have small valves to keep pressure up. Any small debris will cause their leak. Taking your pump apart and clean it can solve leaking issue.

Thank you all. The first item I discovered is the blowoff valve at the water heater, doesn't seal. I'll start there.

I recently found mine to be dripping when water heater was on. I took out the anode and flushed the entire water heater out with a wand tool. Lots of white gunk. During the washing I flipped the pressure relief valve open and shut a bunch of times. Put in new anode, refilled and dripping has stopped.

For me, the most commone reason the water pump runs continuously when turned on is that I neglected to close the city water fill valve after filling the water tank.

Default Water pump running

I would pull the water filter and change it out, if it is seriously dirty it will cause the pump to run as it cannot build up pressure.

After replacing the pressure relief valve, it now holds pressure. Thanks people!

Check for leeks
Makes sure outside shower hot and cold closed so not reserculating
Check any waterheater bypass valves set correctly. Also reserculates water
