Optimus Hiker Plus is a new model based on venerable 8R. This is the type of silencer by Bernie.

Over the years I collected a few stoves. Coleman gas stove are reliable but require a lot of pumping, especially after long start. Large double burner stoves keep pressure for long but flame is not even on both burners.

This is good stove with silencer https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32734073798.html

Another one with silencer and jet cleaning needle. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...42868410%21sea

Looking for a powerhouse, almost 10kW, it holds safely 2l of fuel. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3282...77443086%21sea

This is interesting 3kW beast on kerosene https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...72924269%21sea

The old classic 2-burner briefcase stove is showing as available:

https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Burne...s%2C118&sr=8-4.

As are the Chinese BRS stoves I linked to above.

Not sure why none of the Coleman single-burner stoves are available, probably another symptom of the supply chain issues.

I decided to try a Weber Q since it was praised by several people on this site.
Also, Craigslist is filthy with them in my area. I picked up a dirty but functional Q and stand for $40.
Once disassembled a baking soda/water paste does a great job cleaning up the bowl and lid.
Still soaking the grates.
Removed and brushed (stainless steel brush) the gas tube, scuffed the igniter probe and the grill lit up and hit 200 degrees in seconds. Few minutes more it hit about 600.
These things run about $260 new and another $100+ for the stand. I couldn’t image it costs Weber over $30 to manufacture this grill.
Looking forward to trying it on our next trip.

Just as an update, I ended up using the propane cooker twice during our trip, to cook some fish which would have smelled offensively inside the camper. One time I cooked over a campfire, which nowadays is rarely permitted anymore due to fire concerns.

Most of the time, cooking inside the camper on the stove top is just super convenient, and if it is hot the A/C keeps things cool, stove lit or not.

So, I'll just stick to the propane bottle and burner in the rare occasion that I need to cook outdoors and campfires are not allowed.

Default Grills

I think it’s good to have the option to cook outside. It can definitely get hot and crowded in the van.

But in hindsight I think I should’ve gotten a simple single burner camping stove.
The weber Q I picked up is heavy and bulky.
We will see how it fares on our long summer trip.

We have a Coleman Fold-n-Go double burner stove which is pretty slick as it folds up very compactly. Works good, although we don't use it much because we mostly use the Magma grille.

I think it is from the 60's.

It is wayyy toooo big though.

What makes you say a can of gasoline is safer than a propane can? I guess getting super-heated isn't good for either one.

We have some oil lamps, for romantic evenings, but nowadays LED lanterns are so much more practical.
Coleman Peak 1 white gas backpacking stove when cooking outdoors on a picnic table. Over 30 years using these stoves and never had any issues. One gallon of fuel will last a long time and is safe if stored properly.

Sad thing is that these have been discontinued for a few years now. There are Chinese knockoffs but who knows how those will work out. Very few liquid fuel stoves available new anymore. Too bad because propane is more expensive and does not throw the same amount of heat as the gassers. Convenience over performance and economics.

That being said it is only a stove right? 🙄

I microwave. I pulled my gas stove out; well most. I need to pull the fridge to complete the job. The leftover shallow pan makes a nice spot for things.
I can use a camp stove or plug in a single electric burner outside. I am going to pull my propane tank anyway as I plug in.
