black water tank cleaning product

Can anyone recommend a product I can put in a black water tank to clean/dissolve solids off the sensors? I'm getting false readings on an empty tank. I see a few products out there -- wondering if there's one that people have had the most success with?

I've had some success with a combination of 'Charlie's Soap Booster & Hard Water Treatment' and Pine Sol. Mix a cup of each in a 2-gallon pail & dump into the tank. Fill the tank with water until it's above the top-most sensor. Drive around a bit. Let it sit a few days. Drive around some more, then dump.

We tried all the homebrews and bought cleaners we could find when we had in tank sensors, and even if they worked for a while, it wasn't for long and we started all over again.


We finally just switched to external gauges probable 8 years or more ago. SeeLevel in our case but there are several brands. We have had zero tank sensor issues since so the cost was well worth it.

I agree that the only way to get consistent real-time performance is with external sensors.

Until I upgrade, I use Tanktechsrx with success but patience is needed to let it work.

We have pretty much given up on those internal sensors. We just learned to tune in on the sound that the water makes when flushed down. There is a difference as the tank fills. We have also learned about when the tank should be getting close to full so we tune in a bit sharper for the change in sound. Or one can just peer down the hole with a flashlight, don't drop it, though.

I had to install a new black tank in our current Safari Trek. I installed new internal sensors. Unless they are flushed/rinsed off with a jet of water they will not show empty after draining.

we use " Happy Camper." But the best thing to clean off the sensors is to (after you empty the tank) flush 3-4 gallons of clean water down the toilet when you are at the dump station.

Like everything else. just take a magic pill or add some chemical. My 14 year old sensor still works fine, but it requires about 5-10 minutes of work using the flex wand and johnny chuck. It reads empty when I'm done. I clean it using the below about every other and when dumped the second time, after not using the wand, it won't read empty, but will show 1/3 and work just fine for the other two sensors. I do top off using the GEO method of Dawn and Calgon, but the wand cleans the senors.

Try dumping a few bags of ice down the toilet (after filling it with cold water) and driving around rather aggressively. The ice knocks around and sort of sandblasts the solids. Worked for me!
