If safety is truly a concern for rear passengers, converting a Ford Transit passenger van that comes with side airbags and three point seatbelts for the passengers is the way to go.

this is the reason I had a Transit cargo van with a 2 person Transit passenger bench added. I know I didn't get the side passenger airbags but I think it's safer than the Aktive's or Travato's passenger seats.
My rear sofa has headrests and shoulder straps (2) so it seems reasonably safe.
