Vw vs. Audi

Doing research on what year and model Rialta to buy! I have a few questions: what years did they use the VW drive train? Is it better than the Audi (hope I don't start a fight with that one)? Are there any particular weaknesses to look out for in certain models or years - I'm looking in 2000 to 2004 low mileage price range!?
