Short answer? Yes. I think.
Most wireless home security systems use a variety of battery operated sensors including PIR motion, glass breakage, door/window contacts, smoke, water, etc...
Similarly, a GSM based brain or central control module usually also runs off batteries as a backup in the event of a residential power failure. My home system is set up like this. The base station plugs into a wall outlet but also has hours of battery backup. It has a SIM card and if a sensor trips it dials a series of user defined cell phones. You could add an audible alarm or set it up to notify you silently of a problem.
Bottom line, I'm pretty sure it could be done.

I think it would work also. I don't know what power consumption would be.

Just a note re: the D-Link DCS-930L I mentioned before. Recently, I couldn't get the iPod app to connect to the camera. I tried many time with different settings. Finally, a firmware upgrade for the camera solved the problem.

I have older model D-Link ip cameras and they connected fairly easily (once I figured out the parsing in the apps) to the Android apps I installed for both local router and remote access. One button access on the phone is very convenient. I rarely use the laptop software from the manufacturer anymore.

I am doing a self install of a TattleTale system. It works via cellular and a mobile app. I'm also using a Piper NV camera to check on the coach remotely.

Default canary security system

had anyone tried this security monitoring system?
also, any suggestions on creating a wifi hotspot that can be activated as needed and not cost a monthly fee year round?

Another resurrected thread. I'm trying not to repeat myself within threads but every time I search to ensure I'm not accidentally doing that, the forum returns the message "database error".

Denise, to answer your question, we wired a Canary into our van and use a Netgear AC791L to serve as the bridge between it and my iPhone. I need the Netgear for work purposes anyway, so investing in it was a no-brainer. I think the monthly fee is something like ten bucks (Verizon), so I don't worry about it.

Here's a pic of the system in use, this being screen-shotted from my phone.
The red arrow points toward our dog on the rear couch (the image resolution is better closer to the Canary, for facial recognition purposes).

This same image was used on a recent animal-related thread in which not everyone agreed that animals should be left unattended in vans. I routinely use this to monitor the van while our dog is left in it for short periods (during cool weather only, obviously).

For many people, this is true. For me it was a combination of that, plus I sometimes work out of our rig.

But even if I did not use it for work, there's no way I'm ever loading our dog into an airplane. United Airlines is one of only two carriers that offers reasonable routes and connections from my current location (Houston) to my family home in northeastern Nova Scotia, and their record of killing and/or losing dogs in transit is pretty well-established.

Yep. we bought our RV for our "Free to Good Home" rescue cat.

I keep telling my kids: No matter what you buy, it's never the purchase price that gets you - it's the upkeep!
