Default Onan 2.8 generator starts when holding linkage open

Good evening fellow RVers.
2000 Dodge Roadtrek 190. 2.8 Onan gas generator, will not start unless I use a carb cleaner or hold the throttle linkage open when I crank the generator. Then it will start and run. Shut it down and it will not restart. I don't suspect fuel pump as it will start without any carb cleaner or such. But you better hold the linkage open and that appears to also close the choke.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Model number FA11574G, Serial Number K990019633.

Closing the choke to run implies you're not flowing enough fuel to run properly, and will only due so due to less air entering the carb that now matches the lower fuel. Likely due to partially clogged up jets in the carb, with carb needing to be disassembled, cleaned, and put back together.

Either one will provide the additional fuel to get a motor to fire for a couple seconds... Ether will just do it much more efficiently.

Though upon going over his post again, I may have misunderstood exactly what he's got going on here too. I was reading it as it will run while he's holding the linkage open, keeping the choke closed.

But if that's just to get it started initially, then it continues to run on it's own without holding the linkage open, that implies an issue with the automatic choke function. Though it should refire ok once the motor warms up a bit.

So I was remiss in not asking for additional info as well.

I had the same problem on my Onan generator in my Thor Axis. The issue was that the automatic choke was not working correctly. Fixing the automatic choke solved the issue completely.

Mine was doing the same thing, but mine would restart after I first started it. I changed the spark plug and it is doing fine now.

Check your gasline that runs from the tank to the generator. Mine was cracked.....made all kinds of problems. ..and it's an easy fix.
