Default Floating stuff in batteries

As long as I can remember, wet cell batteries that I have had would have some floating stuff in the electrolyte. I thought it was just the way things work, but it always seemed a little odd to be so careful about adding distilled water when you had stuff floating around that shouldn't be there.

While we were messing around with chargers, equalizing, etc. we noticed that the electrolyte in our coach batteries cleared up, with no more floating stuff in them. The starter battery, that we didn't worry about, still had it. After 7 weeks on the road, the electrolyte was still clear (the batteries tested totally full per SG)

Perhaps the floating stuff is a good indicator of the batteries needing equalizing, or better charging.

Those with wet cells, do you have clear electrolyte, or stuff floating on the surface of it?

I don't recall any floating stuff in any batteries I have had. Maybe I haven't looked close enough. Too cold outside to look now.

I have alot of vehicles- alot of batteries- I've never seen anything floating in a battery which was working properly...if the plates sulfate- the crystals will usually stay on the plate and if dislodged- I think they fall to the bottom.

interesting.
