should I wire the MPPT controller to the battery? or to the dc fusebox?

Be aware that if you have solar panels attached to the controller, but no battery connected to the controller, if the panels get into sunlight they can raise the voltage too high for whatever is connected in the van and the controller, damaging them.


For that reason most of the manufacturers recommend hooking up the controller directly to the battery with no disconnects between them to prevent the problem.


Of course this give the possibility of the slight amp draw of the controller killing the battery if in dark storage, so in that case a pullable fuse could be used to disconnect the controller. Just be sure to put it back in before going out in the sunlight.


On our setup, we do have the fuse, but also put a switch on panels so we can just disconnect them to be safe against errors.
