Question Anyone Use a Portable Ice Maker While Camping?

Thinking about getting one since I spent a few dollars on ice to keeping our beverages cold over the summer while camping. I would think having an ice maker would pay itself off after a few trips.

Anyone have a certain brand? I saw the Della portable ice maker has good reviews on AMAZON ($129.97). Thanks,

I'll watch this with interest- amazon has "dynamic" pricing...when I look I see $110 free shipping

https://www.amazon.com/Della-Portabl.../dp/B01AYKYCSQ

a user may see different prices depending on browser or IP address ( VPN !) and whether signed in or not

I wouldn't want to haul one around for us, but to each their own. Only good when you have shore power, I would assume, which we don't have very often any more. We buy ice every 3-4 weeks of travel, along with a 99 cent foam cooler, to defrost the frig, but the rest of the time don't need ice. Usually pitch the cooler when done defrosting and the ice melts. I don't mind warm drinks, and the frig works fine for DW.

Default Anyone Using a Portable Ice Maker While Camping

A fews back, we came upon two RT'ers (190's) that had these machines - sitting on a table outside their rigs. Both seemed completely happy to have them. We have one for home use, but with the limited space in the RT, it looks to be too big to store in one of the outside compartments - and something to step over inside. Think if I want the ice, I would follow Booster's idea and pick up a foam deal.

I have one of those I bought to carry on the RV. Ended up too bulky to store anywhere. Then I tried taking it on the boat. Same issue. Ended up putting in the man-cave. Works OK there.

The device works fine. Makes ice really quickly. Never measured how many amps it draws, but considering how it works, it must be a fairly robust draw.

I use one all the time, works fantastic, I usually start it making ice about an hour before we get to a camp spot and the ice is full and ready to party. It pulls about 7 amps on startup but once it starts it goes down to about 3 amps. I run it off a 1500 watt inverter. We run a freezer and the ice maker at the same time off the 1500 watt. I have 300 watts of solar panels and 3x125 AH storage batteries and have never run out of power using the freezer 24/7 and the ice maker when we need it.

We use ice cube trays in the freezer. I love tech, but this one seems kind of redundant.

I agree with booster. And besides, $129.97 is still a bit too costly, in my opinion. A foam cooler would help you save a lot.

Our refrigerator has a separate freezer door and enough capacity to store a bag of pre-made ice whether it is bought or made in our freezer with ice cube trays and stored.

Thumbs up

I started this thread about 2 years ago. I ended up getting one that Christmas. Works great at home. I have not used in the B as it would use a lot of counter space. We do use it in Fiance's Class C (B+) 2002 Dynamax Carri-go.

We've had our icemaker for about a year now. Moves from the house to the van and back. Efficient and useful are how I can describe it. By the time we've set up the van it's already made ice and we can have a cold drink and enjoy.

Makes about a pound of ice per hour and around ten minutes to make a batch.

I have a few RV friends with ice maker machines. They are the ones who enjoy happy hour with their friends and I am a dutiful friend.

.

I have got an idea...

Instead of replacing an old fridge,
one can buy a cooler and an ice maker
