FromSt. Louis to Virgina, what to see/do?

In late August or early September, I'll be traveling from Oregon to Virginia by a somewhat northern route, then back by a more southern route. I've gotten as far as St. Louis in looking for interesting, out of the way things to see, and wonder if anyone has suggestions. I don't care for cities much and would rather drive off interstate highways if I can. Boondocking or at least rougher camping is preferred.

Not sure of you exact route nor time table, but if you're looking for a night near StL try Hawn Sate Park outside of Ste Genevieve, Mo. A nice quite park with lots of character. A small creek and a couple of hiking trails, but nice & quiet (at least every time we've been there).
