Samsung Electronics has announced NHTSA recall 04E031000, which affects 117,157 RV-mounted microwave ovens that were built by Samsung between May 1, 2000, and September 30, 2003. The models included in this recall are: MR1031WB, MR1032BB, MR1033SB, MR1351WB, and MR1352BB. The model number and the date the oven was manufactured can be found on the inside of the microwave oven door.
Samsung has determined that a defective membrane panel in the affected microwave ovens may cause them to begin operation on their own, which could result in excessive heat, smoke, or fire.
Samsung will repair the ovens free of charge and is currently working with more than 150 RV manufacturers nationwide to arrange to have the microwave ovens repaired. In the meantime, owners of RVs with the affected ovens should unplug the unit; or, if that is not possible, leave the microwave door ajar, which will prevent it from operating. As a general safety precaution, items should never be stored in microwave ovens or left in ovens after use.
The models mentioned in this recall are in addition to the Samsung models included in NHTSA recall 03E044000 published in the December 2003 “Recall Corner” (MR5491G, MR5491G01, MR5492W, MR5494W01, MR5493G, MR5493G01, MR5494W, MR7491G, MR7491G01, MR7492W, MR7492W01, MR7493G, MR7493G01, MR6698WB, MR6699GB, and MR6699SB).
