is the backup camera also a rear view mirror?

The remote camera in the back the wireless ones anyway get their power from the reverse back up lights. IF you had a full time hot 12 vdc wire back there just connect it to that camera power.
Every one of my rigs, the back-up camera came on the radio/GPS screen. On the late model Promasters... '22 and after, there was an option of an always on camera running through the rear view mirror.
But that was not available in 2019.

I installed a wireless camera years ago on our Roadtrek and it is wired to be on full time. I like to see what is behind me going down the road as well as when backing up. In boondocking it is sometimes nice to see at night when all the lights are out what that strange critter you heard out back might be. Particularly in bear and cougar country.
When we also had a Class C I wired the same arrangement and had the camera positioned so when towing the Jeep I could see the towing equipment as well as the Jeep. I liked that just for safety. Then, when camping and after the Jeep was disconnected it was great to back into a close campsite.

Well as far as I can tell, after going in the Chevrolet owners manual zero info, same as for the 2008 Roadtrek book, the reversing camera mounted above and on the license plate was wireless. They took out the OEM radio etc and added an after market AM-FM USB unit and purchased a new screen that was also Wireless but worked with the OEM camera?
There are two basic issues with rear cameras that can be worse with the mirror mount location.
One is the view size compared to a mirror. All the cameras I have sen made the view smaller so the traffic behind you is closer than it looks like on the screen when compared to a mirror.
Second applies if you wear progressive or bifocal glasses. The mirror position is above you so in the wrong focus zone on most vehicles. A mirror doesn't have that problem because it is a reflection that the same as normal distance to the objects.
We have a dual cameras rear camera setup that has a narrow field of 35* for long view and shrinks the image less than wider view. The other camera is wide angle for see things close up to the rear of the van that can't be seen with the mirrors or other camera when backing up. The monitor is mounted on the face of the dash.

I do not much care for the wireless, mine was hardwired. Wireless is a bit misleading as they have to be wired for power.
I have had two RVs and a Jeep with wireless no issues. How else would you reliably power a camera without a wire to a 12 volt source?
