Power Problems at the beginning of a journey in 1995 Rialta

I have a 1995 Rialta and make the same four hour trip along the California coast about every two months. It does fine on the hills during one leg of the trip (when the hills are near the end) but can hardly make it up the hills on the return leg of the trip (when the hills are at the beginning). It seems like once the car has been humming along on the flats, it can better meet the challenges of the hills. What could this be?On the return trip, I almost stall out the power is so bad ...

Have you checked the gas tank to make sure there is not a vacum lock.
