Default XL Flex mods

5F (-15 C) and 3 feet of snow!
Time to be nostalgic of all the mods we did on our beast, safely parked for the winter at her stable (between a Sundance and a Roadtrek!)

Review of the modifications made on our Safari Condo Promaster XL Flex.

Mods done by Safari Condo during the building process:

1- Added 12V plugs on each side of the bed

2- Asked for a trash can under the sink (they modified the shelf)

3- Asked Safari Condo to install a new LED strip lighting in the awning

7- And the large Kiiper version on the side of the dinette bench seats

8- Changed the front Grille to an original Fiat
Found it at FIAT Ducato 2006- Grille

(much nicer than the heavy RAM crosshair Grille IMO!)

Can change it to a Peace sign on special occasions!

9- had the RAM badges removed by the up fitter

10- installed a RAM only badge on the back door (to confuse people even more!)

Nice.

dealing with an older van and a resistance to part with money...
I got 2 home depot aprons ( 77¢) and safety pinned them to the roll down side curtains.
these have large pockets which hold glasses, phone etc at bedtime.
the phones can be charged over night, i have charger cable run into these

This is therapy!

14 - Installed a more stable permanent flange for the dinette table

Safari Condo offers a very practical movable base that can also be used outside

15- Installed a Fantastic Fan cover for the hot and rainy season

(the front lip of the cover barely fitted under the solar panels)

16- Had a Trimetric meter installed by Safari Condo
Finally a percentage value for battery SOC! (very useful for our boondocking)

The shunt

OK, sorry for monologing, I didn't realize I had so much mods!

The complete album at https://centrelab.smugmug.com/PERSO-...docom/n-MNSpq/

17- Ordered and installed great Northwest seat covers
https://www.nwseatcovers.com/en

Some custom cutouts but a great fit and confort, plus better protection for spills.

So many great ideas!

Where did you get the Fiat badge? The grill looks to ship without one.

Great looking RV! I like the mods you made thanks for posting.
My wife and I are very interested in this model particularly for the rear bed but also for the front dinette and other features. This looks like the perfect RV for us. We may purchase this model or get a custom unit built from Sportsmobile with under bed bike storage.
I have a couple of questions- do you sleep with the bikes under the bed? Do you find that the headroom is adequate for sleeping? Any problem getting up onto the bed with bikes underneath? How tall are your bikes?
I like how you have the bikes mounted, you still have considerable room for other storage under the bed.

We are going to try and visit the factory this summer when we are vacationing in the area.

Thanks CyclingCamper,

More and more we are convinced that under-the-bed bike storage is the ideal solution. Our bike handlebars clear our platform bed at 32" so its barely an inch higher that the kitchen countertop.

We also use our Thule articulated hitch bike rack, but we find that bikes get dirty on long trips and we occasionally have to store the heavy rack inside, when we use ferries (the length of our vehicle 20' 11" is the limit before being considered commercial on some ferries)

Although more limited, we have ample head room when the bed is at the level for bike storage. The only drawback is when it's hot and humid, we have big windows on each side of the bed, but still being 20" closer to the roof of the van makes a difference. Usually we camp in cool areas so it's not a problem. We've seldom used the AC, but it's then better to lower the bed because of the noise and the air flow.

Also, it's a lot quicker to detach the bikes from the hitch rack, then to reattach the front wheels. We sometimes simply leave the bikes locked to the picnic table when we bike from the camp site.

The FLEX bed system makes it very easy to try all the options, but as mentioned, our preferred mode is the bike storage under the bed.

The Safari Condo upfitted a Sprinter with the same layout as the ProMaster XL Flex and you can see the very practical folding step that makes it easy to access the bed when the bikes are under it. The bikes they are using have hefty handlebars so their bed are higher than ours. The beauty of the elevating bed is that you can adjust to your need.

...an extra photo (from the Sprinter XL Flex album) of the headroom clearance with the bed in the high position for the under-the-bed bike storage.

thanks for the updates George. The more we see the more we like this model!
I wondered what that little door was for, nice design as a flip up step. On our build I would ask them to remove that step though or redesign it so it could be removed along with the potion above it so that we could load our 8 foot long tandem bike into the van for travel to local rides. We wouldn't be camping with the tandem.

The small door is actually only the step system. The whole panel slides out easily with the step for carrying long items (see attached photo) Very clever and simple design.

(removing the batteries for winter storage)

And the elevating bed converts the B into a cargo van instantly

Montreal's recreative vehicle show | RV Show Montreal

Can't wait to see their new models: the Promaster XLPlus and maybe the Sprinter XL Flex!

OK, this looks like a sales pitch

Enjoy the quest for your future B!

CyclingCamper:
I have ordered a new 2016 Safari Condo Sprinter 3500 XLFlex model and I am anxious to get my hands on it. One thing to keep in mind is that as of Oct 2015 when I ordered mine the delivery was 13 months after placing the order! These units are not in stock, but if you can afford the wait the advantages that George has spelled out regarding flexibility and support from Safari Condo it is well worth the wait. I myself am going to use the time to research into tweaks and mods to customize this unit into the best fit for our needs.
Good Luck in your search!
