Default My solution to the Roadtrek narrow bed

I bought our 2005 Roadtrek 210 popular because it had the longest, widest twin beds of any of the affordable class Bs I compared.

Because my wife is small the shorter bed is adequate for her. The longer bed is just long enough, but not wide enough to be comfortable for me.
Roadtrek gives the option of converting the twins to one large bed. However, that requires one of us to climb over the other, or, scoot down the bed to the end to get up. Neither is acceptable for us.

My solution was to obtain heavy duty steel shelf brackets mounting them between the compartment doors. I reinforced the screw points on the inside of the compartments. The reinforcements are glued and screwed to the bulkheads. I obtained a piece of red oak for the platform extension and pieces for cleats to keep it in position. I added a piece on the aisle side as the main piece was narrower than desired, and while not needed for strength, it did add some to the main piece. The bed is now 39+ inches wide. The isle is wide enough to sit up on the bed and put my feet on the floor and to move freely. If the wider bed extension is not needed, it is easily removed and goes against the wall fold out braces and the back cushion goes against it. The brackets lift up and are stored in a compartment.

There are some other things RT did that I did not care for:
1, The larger of the 2 tables is stored under the longer bed, not comfortable to sit/lay on. When the table is removed there is a 6" hole in the bed platform where my shoulder/arm push on the cushion. I concluded we didn't need the large table so we leave it at home. The small table intended for up front fits good in the rear when needed. A piece of 16ga steel painted to match the platform covers the hole.

2, While the cushions are 29" wide, they are unsupported for 2+ inches on the aisle side. On the shorter bed I added wood that extends further out supporting all but a 1/2" of the cushion. Its attaching points were also reinforced. The longer beds extension gives full cushion support on that side.
